Our Investment Journey: We have trained our machine learning algorithms to design a product where an average investor can allocate his maximum equity investment. This gave rise to our first product – “Great Himalayan Compounder”.
Our machine learning algorithm identified these interesting insights –
1) Long-term return of a portfolio is almost equal to the profit-growth of the portfolio companies
2) Companies that go on to compound their earnings and share price returns in long-term, have identifiable traits in them.
We trained our algorithm to identify these companies based on their fundamental data only. And the result was astounding. The strategy created has delivered an average annual return of 24% i.e. an alpha of 10-12% over Nifty50, but with risk (standard deviation) equal to that of Nifty50 in 3-year holding period and more. On adding corporate governance and management quality checks, the performance became even better. To top it all, we ensured that the investment rules used by our algorithms was understandable to humans to ensure transparency and monitoring.
Formula for long-term investment success from our ML engines: One of the thousand rules that came out of our algorithm is: 13-14-24-20-8-11-C
Explanation: This rule selects all companies that have delivered 20% Return of Equity and 8% Operating Profit growth in at least 11 of the last 13 years
Outcome: Investing by this simple rule only has delivered an average return in excess of 20% over the last 23 years.
Great Himalayan Compounder is built on a combination of 142 such rules for non-BFSI companies and 93 such rules for BFSI companies.
